I think these guys got what they deserved. The only reason to make a proposal public is to guilt the girl into saying ‘yes’, hence, the only fitting punishment is the embarrassment you receive when she turns you down.
Or maybe I’m just heartless?

There’s actually one more evil reason for such a public proposal: attention whoring, not necessarily to get the woman to say yes, but to soak up the expected adulation that would result from an affirmative response to said proposal.
