Allergist update

I got my results from the allergist:

Allergy evaluation in order to try and determine the cause of your food problems showed a strong positive reaction to egg white, and lesser to wheat. In addition, you reacted to milk, peanut, and tomato. If you’ve been avoiding a food for a long period of time, the test could be falsely negative. If you know any of these foods have caused problems in the past, they should be totally avoided; otherwise, we should do a diet of avoidance followed by reintroduction.

The testing to the environmental factors showed a minimal reaction to mold spores.

(emphasis mine)

I’m not at all surprised about the wheat and peanuts, but the egg white, milk, and tomato are a bit shocking, considering I eat/drink these things all the time (though that may explain my relatively common stomach miserableness). But, I guess that’s the point of the ‘diet of avoidance. I’m glad that it was confirmed that I’m not allergic to cats or rats, though I’m surprised that I don’t seem to be allergic to any pollen.

I’m supposed to avoid the following foods for three weeks:

  • Milk & Dairy Cow, goat (homogenized, pasturized, evaporated, condensed, skim, raw, butter, powdered, selective infant formulats), yogurt, ice cream, sherbert, butter, cheese, cream (sour, whipped), casein, lactalbumin, nut milk, soy milk, and tofu
  • Eggs all
  • Vegetables Bell pepper, tomato (strawberry, melon pear, tree, ground cherry), eggplant, white potato, peas (black-eyed [cowpea], chick [garbanzo], split and green), and beans (broad [fava], carob, common, kidney, navy, pinto, string [green], jack, lima, soy, lentil)
  • Grains Potato flour, soybean, acacia, alfalfa, wheat (whole, bran, germ, bamboo shoots, pumpernickel), and wheat flour (gluten, graham, all purpose, cake)
  • Fat Oils, butters or lards whihc may contain peanut, soybean, or milk
  • Spices Cayenne pepper (chili, paprika or red pepper)
  • Misc Tobacoo, peanut (butter, brittle), licorice, tamarind, tragacanth, and mesquite

So in short, for the next three weeks, I can only drink water and rice milk, eat rice, corn, carrots, celery, lettuce, onions, spinich, grapes, squash, very small rocks, and churches.

In regards to false negatives, I know I’ve had reactions to hazelnuts and apple (as well as other fruit) skins in the past. Since they noted in their letter that “If you’ve been avoiding a food for a long period of time, the test could be falsely negative,” I’m not too concerned about this. The nurse told me that I probably am allergic to these things since I’ve had reactions before, and that I should avoid them. Apparently my fruit skin reaction (wherein the skins of fruit make my gums go numb, but the actual fruit doesn’t) is actually a really common allergy.

In regards to false positives, I told the nurse that I eat eggs constantly and have never had a reaction, and she said that I can probably keep eating them safely. Also, I think tomatoes are probably safe, but may be listed because of their closeness to other foods (such as beans) that I suspect I am allergic to. White bread is okay too, because most everything is stripped out of the wheat and it is bleached when it is made, making it more likely to be safe.

Anyway, after talking to the nurse for a while, she told me that I was very strange “in more ways than one” (I think she was referring to my allergies, mostly), and that I was really healthy and that was good (I think she determined this by the fact that I biked there). She also told me to wear a dogtag that lists some of the things I am severely allergic to so that when I collapse on the sidewalk people won’t think I’m just drunk or diabetic. I also got a prescription for an stimpak epi-pen, which I’m supposed to use even if I’m not sure I’m having a real allergic reaction (in which case I’ll just get a faster heartrate and jitters for a while).

Fun, fun.
