Famous is I

A quote from me is in a CNET story that was posted 2 months ago, and I didn’t even find out about it until I read about it on a forum this morning…

Starting at the bottom of the second page,

Ithaca, N.Y.-based Web developer Teri Solow said she appreciated the clarity of Nintendo’s policy for the DS. Even though the company basically promises to fix any screen defects bad enough to annoy the consumer, Solow decided that the bum pixel or two on her player weren’t noticeable enough to warrant replacement.

“Dead pixels bother some people more than others, and I’m sure there are many people out there who would be much more upset at getting one dead pixel in their DS than I was at getting two,” Solow said. “By giving everyone the option to get their screens replaced, Nintendo is ensuring that everyone who cares deeply about such things will end up happy.”

Of course I remember giving the interview, but I never heard anything after that so didn’t think my quotes were used.

I’m not even (that) sore that I was cited as being a ‘Web developer’. It’s better than being a ‘web designer’, at least (the former implies some programming and somesuch, which is what I do [and a good portion of that happens to be on the web]).

New record

As of now, my maximum recorded speed on my bicycle is 31.1 mph. I think I’d consider that breakneck speed :)

Also, it’s proof once again that I’m improving (at least that I’m becoming less afraid of high speeds on the downhills).

Area 51

This is kinda interesting. (From GeekPress)

I don’t know if I’d attribute those bumpy things to sekret govment research, but I am curious as to what they really are (and if it’s aliens, that’s even more interesting :) ).

Kids’r weird

I biked over to the Plantations this morning to chill next to the lake and get some reading in, and a bunch of kids were their with their families.

One little girl came up to me and introduced herself (her name is Beatrice) and then described her family to me, including the first names of her 3 siblings and parents, and the ages of her siblings. Then she conspiratorially sidled up to me and told me:

I just got really close to a goose, and he pooped!

I didn’t know exactly how to respond to this, but since some response was obviously expected of me, I said, “Well, everybody poops. [sic]”

I don’t think this response was sufficient, because at that point she wandered off.

Locals

The idea of asking locals their “hotel tips” is ludicrous to me, because the locals seem to be the least likely people to actually use local hotels.

I should probably stop seriously considering the logicalness of ads I see on the Internet.

Anyway, good morning and stuff!

Beautiful day

I’ve been trying to get my weekend enjoyment in doubletime this weekend on account of the fact that I have to waste spend next weekend in meetings at Penn State ( :,/ ). Luckily for me, today was a beautiful day, and tomorrow may bring more of the same.

I started off the day by taking a brief bike ride, which made me come to the conclusion that I really want a saddle bag so that I can carry my camera safely on those days which I choose not to wear a backpack. So after a while happicow, Marty, and I went down to the commons (with the Jeep’s top off, of course) so happicow could get a haircut and I could stop by the Outdoor Store (where I got my saddlbag, as well as some hiking boots [leather, which I feel bad about, though not bad enough to not buy leather hiking boots]).

After that, we stopped by happicow”s property, where the ground appears to be bleeding,

Ground bleeding

and we got a chance to look around at the ground-clearing process as wel as have a chat with the neighbors.

Once done there, we decided to enjoy the day a bit by going to a park. Ideally, I wanted to try out my new hiking boots, but we ended up going to a more tame park (which still had a nice view).

Then we returned home, where we screwed around for a while, until Marty needed caffeine and I needed to conquer my cabin fever. So we decided to go for a walk to College Town/Stella’s (where I had an iced Red Cross, which was really good). Here are two noteworthy things I felt like photographing along the way, but don’t feel like commenting on too much now:

Pac Mans
Industrial Deer

After returning home, we had a barbeque. Now I’m being antisocial (what else is new?) by blogging in my room whilst everyone else has an interesting conversation in the living room.

And that’s my exciting day. Aren’t you glad you bothered to read this? That’s a hypothetical question, by the way. I really don’t want an answer. Really.

Download Debate

Last night, happicow, Beth, Marty, and I went to see the 2nd bit of Cornell’s Download Debate series.

I’m sure if you really wanted a non-biased and in-depth review you would try and read it somewhere else, so instead I’ll just give you my impressions:

  • The moderator didn’t do a very god job moderating, hence the debate ran for about 3 hours.
  • The entertainment industry tools did a very good job of telling partial truths (and complete lies), and managed to respond to every question while not actually answering any of them.
  • Cary Sherman == Palpatine
  • DRM != empowerment, and anyone who tells you otherwise just wants your wallet (and maybe your first-born).

In completely unrelated news, I’m thinking I’m gonna take a cue from Marty, give my moleskine a break, and give this Hipster PDA thing a go. I’ve already made the initial investment in money and time.

I’ve come to a decision

In an effort to reduce debt, I am no longer going to carry my credit cards with me. I’ll carry my debit card, and if I want to buy something I’d best have enough monies in the bank, else I’ll just have to forego instant gratification. Yes, even for groceries.

Hopefully I’ll get my debts paid off before the US economy hits rock bottom. I figure it’ll take me a few months. I dunno, it’ll be cuttin’ it close…
