“Shop smart, shop S-Mart!”

It doesn’t strike me that it is likely for a world wherein this (bugmenot requred, excepting that you follow the link from google news [?!]) is a good idea exists, exceptng that they change the name, in which case a good movie reference can be garnered from the whole thing, if nothing else.

Eh, who cares if they actually change the name. I’m choosing to make the reference anyway, every chance I get. If people get it, hopefully they will be amused. If they don’t, hopefully I will.

0_o;;

This just scared the bejeezus out of me. At work. In front of my co-workers.

Only watch it if you are a true skeptic- that ghost is most definitely there. Also, the volume in the clip is really pretty low, so to hear the whispering tune it up so you can hear the music at the beginning of the commercial clearly, you’ll just be able to hear the whispering, really quiet in comparison to the rest of the commercial, at the very end.

Early morning and car fixings

I took the 8 AM bus today because I have a meeting at 9 and the 9 AM bus won’t get me to work in time. While on the bus, I had the interesting sensation of looking to my left and seeing my own car drive past. Normally, this would worry me; today it simply amused me.

Yeah, I dropped my car off at the mechanic last night to finally get my snow tires put on. While it’s there, I’m also going to get the rear springs replaced (another one has broken since the last time I checked), and my transmission fluid changed. All of this can be done for significantly less money than that other place I went to a while back.

So now that I’m dumping approximately half a grand into this thing, I think I’ll keep it for a while. New cars, even really cool ones can wait. At least until I pay off all this debt.

Firefox 1.0

I’ve just upgraded to Firefox 1.0, and in addition to not being able to install any extensions because the extension page is slow, I have discovered that my favorite feature of Firefox seems to have disappeared…… the cookie prompt.

Where before there used to be several options in the cookie preferences (equivalent to ‘Yes’, ‘No’, and ‘Ask me each time’), now there seems to be just one checkbox with ‘Allow sites to set cookies’. This is so not cool, as a simple binary really doesn’t suit the realistic needs of someone who doesn’t want a zillion tracking cookies on her computer but does want to be able to say, shop online. Of course, I can use the ‘exceptions’, but setting those up manually for each site I want to visit is unrealistic.

Anyone know what’s up with this? Please tell me this was an accident on their part, or at least that there is a way to restore the old functionality (but only if by doing so you wouldn’t be lying or making things up :) ).

I’ve tried googling, but it seems that things are a bit soon for that yet. Also, what passes for a changelog doesn’t seem to mention anything of the sort.

Edit: Also, I just discovered that the whole “Open links from other applications in a new tab in the most recent window” thing doesn’t work anymore. This 1.0 release is seeming much worse than the last release candidate I had installed. I’m seriously debating just saying “Hell with this s***” and either downgrading or seeing how galeon is doing these days.

Ithaca is cold…

…. but it took a long time for the snow to start. It’s flurrying now (this is the first time that I have seen it snow and others have confirmed that it actually is snowing). By the end of the season, we’ll be getting nearly an inch of snow every night.

I really should get those snow tires put on my car….

Oh, and another first for today: I missed the bus and had to walk to work. Luckily, it’s only 2.2 miles, and since it only took 40 minutes I didn’t end up too late (e.g., I still got here before Beth, if only barely).

Oh, and btw – the cold is a good thing, even though the snow is a pain in the arse to drive/walk in.

${Jeep_bullet_holes}+=2

Sometime on friday, Chris’ car got shot. He doesn’t know exactly when, he just knows that it wasn’t there in the morning, and it probably wasn’t there at lunchtime. He noticed it halfway back from work that evening, and believes that it is likely that it happened while he was driving.

The bullet hole(s) go from the driver side window to the passenger side window, and show that the source was approximately level with the car. If it had happened while Chris was driving, it would have gone approximately 6″ in front of his chest. The police officers said it was most likely a ’22, and hypothesized that this may be the work of someone copycating the Maryland Sniper.

Disconcerting, to say the least. But definitely the most interesting development this weekend (to give you an idea, in a distant second is me starting a new game of FFV).

Post-election

Well, everyone and their brother in the blogging circles I frequent have already commented on the recent (and depressing future) state of affairs regarding the U.S. presidential election, so I’ll be über-brief with a few points:

  • I keep hearing people talking about seceding from the union or wondering what would have happened if the South had won the Civil War. This is simply amazing. I’d say it was an overreaction if similar thoughts (of seceding, not of the South winning) hadn’t crossed my mind Wednesday morning. The fact that more than a few people are talking about this just goes to show what a sorry state of affairs our empire is currently in. United we stand, divided we fall and all. I don’t know how we plan to continue waging wars of terror all over the planet with mass dissent at home like this.
  • I believe there is going to be a draft, and this worries me greatly.
  • We will never recover from this exploding deficit, nor will we ever try.
  • Star wars is only cool when Lukas makes it, and even then only about 50% of the time.
  • Freedom is slavery.
  • If Diebold hadn’t infested Ohio, would the results have been different? I think so.
  • Cheney will most likely run for president in 2008, and he will probably win. It is quite possible that there will never be another real election, at least if the menace that is Diebold continues to spread.
  • I really don’t want to be on the wrong side of World War III.
  • If I didn’t love Ithaca so much, I might have made plans to flee to Canada. I wonder if my laziness and fondness of my home are similar to what people in certain areas of Europe felt before WWII.

That was significantly longer than I planned, and I still haven’t scratched the surface of the torrent of negative emotions this has caused in me. I simply don’t have the words.

It’s a shite state of affairs.

Mood: depressed

Vote

I voted today. Did you?

New York has the old fashioned mechanical lever-pulling machines, so you really feel like your vote is official. When Beth and I went out there today at lunch, there was absolutely no line. We were the only two voters at that particular polling station (I think this is because of luck, not a general lack of interest).

I really hope Kerry wins. No good can come from Bush being reelected.
