So, Chris up and bought a boat. He wanted to ride about in Cayuga Lake this weekend, and didn’t want to rent one- so he bought a relatively decent boat for $1000. I say “relatively decent” because though it’s seaworthy and the 100 horsepower motor works fine, all the seats save one broke off during our first outing (though I think they may not have been installed properly). I am of the opinion that the boat should be named /dev/float, but that’s just me.
Before boating, we woke up too late and spent too much time watching TV (Well, that’s a matter of opinion, the Spider-man cartoon [circa 90s] was on, and it was a marathon! I almost got to see part of an episode of the original 70s cartoon, too.) and then Peter and I went to check out Free Comic Book Day over at Comics For Collectors in the commons. Even though we got there late still managed to be among the first 100 people, so we got free Spider-man figurines in addition to a small stack of free comic books.
Boating itself was relatively fun, if not a bit annoying. I got a mild but persistant headache pretty quickly, and all my crap got wet (I’ve been told by several people that I shouldn’t bring stuff I don’t want getting wet onto a boat, but whenever I go out in a boat with my dad I don’t have a problem so I think the fault lies in places other than boats in general.). Most of my stuff is drying out, and the only damage is to some books- notably my new Essential Spider-man #1 compilation and my Moleskine, and even that damage is minor, at least. I also managed to get myself sunburned, but that’s not too bad either (and I fully accept the consequences as I refuse to wear sunblock for various reasons I won’t go into here).
We ended up riding about all day, and got as far as about halfway up the lake (about 20 miles) before turning back- and all with only ~40 gallons of gas!
Oh, and I know all the Spider-man stuff seems a bit excessive, since I just saw the movie the other night, but I’ve really been meaning to get into a specific comic book mythos for quiite a long time. Previously, I had wanted to get into X-Men, but that was just so daunting that I never started (plus, I only really ever liked Gambit, and thought everyone else’s favorite, Wolverine, was more than a bit overrated). Then I realized that I always liked the 90s era Spider-man cartoon (largely because of the misunderstood outcast-genius aspect), and to follow Spider-man I really just have to read the ~500 backissues of The Amazing Spiderman to get the “main” storyline (I’ll save all the parallel universe stories for when I get really bored, this will take me long enough). In addition, Spider-man takes place in the same universe as X-men, so they get to have interactions and stuff. So, I’ve started buying compilations, and have gotten a subscription to read new issues of the comic as they come out. Yep. Otaku is me.
