Either I’m getting denser, or this is getting dumber

It must have been great to be an animator for the old Spider-Man cartoon (if you’re a slacker like me, anyway). I’ve seen over half of it, and I’ve seen the same 6 scenes about 1000 times….. it seems like each new episode adds about a total of 3 new frames. And whenever they have extra time in an episode they rehash the theme song and show the same 3 “web-slinging” scenes in varying orders with varying backdrops. These 1,144 minutes of show could have probably been weeded down to about 45 if one were to weed out all the rehashed scenes…. It’s even worse than that one shot of Nurse falling down that they keep using in Star Trek TOS….

In actual news, today I went out to buy new shoes and groceries and ended up buying about 4 times as much stuff as I wanted…. Yay, impulse shopping. At least I did manage to get some über-cool shoes (yay, Converse All*Stars)….

Still here…

Don’t worry about me- if I were dead, I would have blogged it by now. Since I haven’t been blogging, obviously I’m still alive ;)

I have bought more Spider-Man stuff in the past few weeks than I’d care to enumerate. Currently, I’m watching the old cartoon from the 60′s (which I bought on DVD). I just noticed (around episode 23) that the “bad guys” have started having green faces. This, while odd, is not in and of itself worthy of blogging (that’s never stopped me before- though). What I find particularly blog-worthy and entertaining about this is how much it reminds me of Maniac Mansion, and EarthBound- two of my favortie games in which “evil humans” have blue/green faces (depending on your contrast).

I guess the whole comic code “if it’s not red, it’s not blood” thing is indicative of something larger (and stupider).

Boat

So, Chris up and bought a boat. He wanted to ride about in Cayuga Lake this weekend, and didn’t want to rent one- so he bought a relatively decent boat for $1000. I say “relatively decent” because though it’s seaworthy and the 100 horsepower motor works fine, all the seats save one broke off during our first outing (though I think they may not have been installed properly). I am of the opinion that the boat should be named /dev/float, but that’s just me.

Before boating, we woke up too late and spent too much time watching TV (Well, that’s a matter of opinion, the Spider-man cartoon [circa 90s] was on, and it was a marathon! I almost got to see part of an episode of the original 70s cartoon, too.) and then Peter and I went to check out Free Comic Book Day over at Comics For Collectors in the commons. Even though we got there late still managed to be among the first 100 people, so we got free Spider-man figurines in addition to a small stack of free comic books.

Boating itself was relatively fun, if not a bit annoying. I got a mild but persistant headache pretty quickly, and all my crap got wet (I’ve been told by several people that I shouldn’t bring stuff I don’t want getting wet onto a boat, but whenever I go out in a boat with my dad I don’t have a problem so I think the fault lies in places other than boats in general.). Most of my stuff is drying out, and the only damage is to some books- notably my new Essential Spider-man #1 compilation and my Moleskine, and even that damage is minor, at least. I also managed to get myself sunburned, but that’s not too bad either (and I fully accept the consequences as I refuse to wear sunblock for various reasons I won’t go into here).

We ended up riding about all day, and got as far as about halfway up the lake (about 20 miles) before turning back- and all with only ~40 gallons of gas!

Oh, and I know all the Spider-man stuff seems a bit excessive, since I just saw the movie the other night, but I’ve really been meaning to get into a specific comic book mythos for quiite a long time. Previously, I had wanted to get into X-Men, but that was just so daunting that I never started (plus, I only really ever liked Gambit, and thought everyone else’s favorite, Wolverine, was more than a bit overrated). Then I realized that I always liked the 90s era Spider-man cartoon (largely because of the misunderstood outcast-genius aspect), and to follow Spider-man I really just have to read the ~500 backissues of The Amazing Spiderman to get the “main” storyline (I’ll save all the parallel universe stories for when I get really bored, this will take me long enough). In addition, Spider-man takes place in the same universe as X-men, so they get to have interactions and stuff. So, I’ve started buying compilations, and have gotten a subscription to read new issues of the comic as they come out. Yep. Otaku is me.

Spiderman 2

I just got back from seeing Spiderman 2 with Chris. Holy CRAP was that a good movie! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sequel surpass an original movie quite so much as this before (FYI, I liked the first one too).

Some quick observations:

  • Some of the CG, especially at the beginning of the movie seemed a bit hokey. Either I got used to it by the end, or it got better. Either way, it didn’t take from my enjoyment of the movie.
  • Spidey was a bit too open about his secret identity, IMHO…. sure I know some characters are supposed to find out, but this got to the point where it was like “Why even bother with a mask anymore?”
  • Emotions, settings, everything- this movie did it all the right way.
  • If all comic book movies ended up this good, I don’t think I’d ever need to go see a “normal” movie again.
  • I am so buying this as soon as it comes out on DVD. Until then, I’ll busy myself by reading the comics…

20 Questions to a Better Personality

“Borrowed” from Marcia Barrett Nice, via LinuxChix Live:

You are an SEDF–Sober Emotional Destructive Follower. This makes you an evil genius. You are extremely focused and difficult to distract from your tasks. With luck, you have learned to channel your energies into improving your intellect, rather than destroying the weak and unsuspecting.

Your friends may find you remote and a hard nut to crack. Few of your peers know you very well–even those you have known a long time–because you have expert control of the face you put forth to the world. You prefer to observe, calculate, discern and decide. Your decisions are final, and your desire to be right is impenetrable.

You are not to be messed with. You may explode.

Uwehehehehe! There may just be a bit of truth in this! *boom*
