I shouldn’t have ignored it. I knew better, really I did. But I am broke and couldn’t exactly afford to replace it.

So today I try to mount my flash drive. Nothing happens. It sits there forever- no errors, nothing. So, I reboot in an attempt to fix it. After rebooting, I figure, well, I’ve already killed my (impressive 6 day :-/ ) uptime, might as well install that new kernel that came out a while back while I’m at it. So I do that and reboot. Init fails (segfaults). I try rebooting off of my old kernel. Init fails again, but in a different place. After several more tries with various kernels, the computer never gets past the “Starting X…” stage, but always segfaults in a different place. I run Memtest86, test #5 comes up with ~2500 errors. I turn the computer off and use the circa ’97 Gateway in the den. (Which I am using now)

I called Chris, just to vent to a techy person (and wondering if he knew any good places to get RAM) and he said he just saw a flyer for 256 MB DDR RAM for $36. He just can’t remember which store it was at, so he will call me when he gets home and finds out.

As I was typing this, I tried to boot the other computer again (after having it sitting with the power cut off for a good while) and it worked. :D I thought that letting the power drain for a while/letting it cool down a bit may help. Of course, I’m still replacing the RAM, I really have no choice now. Hopefully tomorrow I will go and buy some (and maybe I can get some of my Christmas shopping[?] done while I’m at it). Yep, there’s nothing like a good kick in the ass to get you moving.

Oh, and I got a call from David today. My first check is on it’s way! w007!

Share the wealth?

Eyes bleeding, but yet I can’t stop laughing. It makes no sense. It is so nonsensical I must post. So much posting do I do.

And that is chapter one. I could go into so many reasons why it is wrong (besides the script format, excessive capitalization, and the fact that much of the story is being ignored [wtf? Why are Janus and Schala together now?]) but there really is no point. When I procrastinate I do silly things like read bad fanfiction, when I should be helping to fix websites that I promised to months ago (I forgot about it entirely o_o)

Sigh. I still need to do basically all my xmas shopping. I have to buy presents for 4 people, and I still have to pick up some more of my own. And it looks like there is supposed to be an ice storm tomorrow (like hell I’m going out in that) so who knows when I will get around to getting it done. Bobby asked me to go with him when he is done with finals, so maybe I can do some of it then… (of course, that is like on the 21st)

Oh well, like they say, hard work often pays off after time, but laziness always pays off now.
Oh, and BTW: spread the holiday spirit. This may be a good place to start….

So, not only have I been immortalized in sprite form, I am now in the latest edition of MoMaM. That is a surprisingly accurate representation of what happened (and me ^^). Maggie, I♥you! You truly are the Paint Guru (and don’t worry, once you explained everything no one was upset anymore! ^^)

So, various interesting good things have happened today. Foremost being that I have made up with my friend. She called me of course, ‘cuz I’m a dork like that and never call anyone. Basically, a huge part of said conflict seems to have been a misunderstanding brought about by he-said she-said crap. That and assumptions being made on the parts of various parties, not the least of which being me. This is a relief, seeing as I never like staying mad at anyone for very long and generally prefer to leave unpleasantness behind me. So yay ^^

Oh, and Maggiekarp decided to link me as an ‘affiliate’ (though I have no comic of which to speak, it would fit nowhere else) on MoMaM. This means I had to make a mini link banner. After a moderate amount of playing, this is the image I came up with. I had really no idea what to put in a minibanner, seeing as this IS just my personal site, so I ended up putting my name and handle in there. I also nicked the sprite image Maggie did of me and put it in (just because it is so uber-cool). You may notice the sprite hanging out on top of the main page, as well. Since my handle appears in the banner, and it is customary to put the name of the site on such things (not to mention I have been meaning to do this for a LONG time anyway) I purchased an additional domain name. That’s right, within a few days http://tekniklr.com should point to my site. Of course, this is just an addition, not a replacement, so it shouldn’t particularly matter to anyone else ^_^

So I woke up and my computer was sitting at the BIOS login screen. I logged in and tried to view the system logs to see what happened (it wasn’t a power hit- presumably my UPS would prevent that and nothing else in the house was affected). As the ‘less /var/log/messages’ runs, the computer freezes and I have to reboot it manually.

This just reeks of some hardware problem….. Just what I need. Although it is possible that this is a fleeting (read: ignorable) problem- I know my RAM isn’t ‘perfect’, per se. (Runs of Memtest86 always had slight errors, and I had other problems about a year ago with it) My computer seems fine now, it’s possible that the manual reboot cleared out whatever error caused the crashes in the first place. I guess I’ll just wait and see!

Well, I’ve been busy. Just today I set up all the indoor Xmas decorations (ooo, aaah). Here is my tree:

That took most of the evening and afterward I decided to go chill on my computer a bit and relax. Recently I’ve done quite a bit of work for FFAF. Besides the three comics, (1 2 3) I have also just finished setting up an eggdrop for #FFAF on scene.org. I was a bit worried about security for this, so I created a new user on my computer who’s sole responsibility is to run the bot. I also was a bit paranoid with the config settings and disabled basically everything. Anyway, the bot doesn’t do too much, it’s main function is to manage a quote database but it also has a few other scripts running (including one I wrote just for shits and giggles).

Anyway, after getting all that done and sitting back for a bit to relax I happen upon this thread on the FFAF forums. This person is Maggiekarp’s friend, and is saying that she is going to host his comic on her site. Well, this is news to me, and Night as well. Seeing as it is his server, and my labor we are speaking about here, I am a bit…. miffed about this, to say the least.

First off, I already decided after getting Into the Black up that I was not going to take on any new webcomic projects. These things do not exactly maintain themselves, and I have other things I must direct my time towards (like getting a job that will pay off my debts). I only have so much time to go around, and with more comics each one will get less of it. Hence, nobody benefits, and I get an ulcer. Secondly, the comic script I wrote was designed for one comic per site. That is all that was needed. I can expand it, but it would be much easier to set up a new comic site entirely. Of course, then it is no longer a side comic (more of an affiliation). Plus, that would entail me picking up and maintaining a whole new comic, which as I already stated I am not willing to do.

Anyway, now I feel like a jerk. But I am pretty pissed that my (volunteer) labor is being offered out without my knowledge or consent. Not cool. Not to mention Night’s server space and bandwidth were also being offered without his knowledge. He said no too, so at least now I don’t have to feel so bad.
